Clay Project for Children - Magical Miniature Doors

Last Saturday afternoon we created magical miniature doors from terracota clay.

Our group ages vary from 6 years up to teenagers.
We cover lots of different areas of art and craft but each month we seem to include clay.

Clay is messy, but its worth it.

And noisy, when you throw the clay to knock the air out of it!

I didn't take a finished piece to show the children.  I wanted them to make their own versions.
So I showed them lots of images.

We also did a lot of chatting about what we wanted to include on our finished pieces.

We then drew a quick sketch plan to try and get down on paper the ideas that are being created in our heads. By the time we get to the clay this might be adapted again and thats part of the process too.

So looking at all the drawings together, I then showed them how they can achieve their ideas with clay.
How to roll to the right thickness? How to make patterns of the wood, or attach detail?

The children share their knowledge with the newer members of the group too.  Its great to see them demonstrating how to score the clay and apply slip to connect the pieces together, or hear how they would make a pattern and discuss why they might choose a particular clay tool.

Whilst creating, lots of discussion goes on about how they might finish these when they are dry.
"Shall we fire them and paint or glaze?"

And this is what we do at a typical art and craft workshop. It is a time to chat about art and craft, our ideas and experiment.  Not everything works, but that IS absolutely fine too.

There isn't always time in a school setting to do things this way and thats why we do them here.
We can chat about it, or not, and if you feel like it we have room to get comfy by laying on the floor to draw.

"This isn't school." I say, "It's your art studio, lets create."

January Artist - Hundertwasser

That moment when you are happily going along and suddenly WOW, you discover an artist that blows your mind. One that has been there your whole life and only NOW you have discovered them.

Hundertwasser has done that this month.

Trees on the rooftops.

Beautiful architecture.

We explored hot and cold colours to create the first step of our own Hundertwasser art pieces.

Who couldn't love an artist who had amazing vision and changed his name to
Friedensreich Regentagand Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser
"Peace-Kingdom Rainy Day Darkly Multi-coloured Hundred-Water"

Just need to decide on a new name for myself - What about Indigo Igo?

What would your name be?

Igo Eco Arts New Studio and Big Draw Event

Our new studio officially opened today with a Big Draw event! It was also Farmer's Market Day, Brownies coffee morning and St Mary's Craft Fair in our small town, Burton Latimer.

We are in The Paddocks car park, appropriately behind the recycling bins, and next to The Sugar Barn.

Workshops are getting booked up for November and we'll have Yarn & Glue (bring your personal project) meet up on Thursday afternoons 1-3pm.

French classes for children start for 4 years + on Thursday 3.30-4.00pm with Chrystelle. There's also a pre-school session on Friday mornings 10-10.30am.

Arty Parties can be booked for your children or group, or what about a girl's night out? Learn a new craft then pop over to Vivo or The Shaad for dinner?!

Look out for our drop-ins, competitions and events and let us know if you'd like to exhibit your own arts, crafts and creations.

Also calling all creatives... If you have a skill to share please let us know and we can support you in running a workshop in our town's very own arts studio/gallery space.

We have some very talented people locally, lets shout about it.

Famous artists inspiring children to use watercolour

At our Saturday art club the children are hooked on watercolour painting.  This is how it started...

Once upon a time there was a beautiful book.

Any child that opened the book and looked inside fell under the spell of artist Jackie Morris, who cast her magical brush across its pages to craft The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems

The children of the art club were now forever hungry to view art from inspiring artists.

The new term began and Deep Space Sparkle came to the rescue.

The bright watercolours, bold outlines and mesmerizing eyes hypnotised the screen's viewer.

This could be it!
A solution to the spell may be the following ingredients...

3d art + watercolour = James Rizzi
http://jamesrizzi.com/
We began straight away by producing our own Rizzi portraits.

Then drew cityscapes using the image below for inspiration.

Over this term the children are creating their own 3D version of Picture This (below),
using their own portraits and buildings.

This is definitely not, the end!
